The Manning Municipal Utilities (MMU), the IKM-Manning School District and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) are again partnering up for another trades class work-based learning project, with some big differences this year. Now in it’s second year, the program serves as an educational tool, providing real-life experiences outside of traditional classroom settings. General Manager for MMU Jeremy Carroll says it’s been rewarding to see the growth of knowledge and skills in the students participating in the class and is amazed at the community support received to not only start a new project, but enhance it.

Last year, Carroll said the district would be willing to open the program to other students from surrounding schools to participate and in 2025, IKM-Manning did just that.

Students will be applying and developing many different skills that Carroll says would not be taught in a typical classroom setting.

Several local businesses and community members have come forward to assist this partnership in its continued success. Carroll says each year, he hopes the program gets bigger and bigger.

Students are expected to start on the construction on the home within the next few weeks. The house will be listed for sale prior to construction and potential homebuyers can request customization purchasing the home early.
