Sac City Man Arrested For Assault On Sac County Sheriff

A Sac City man faces felony charges in connection with the assault that led to Sac County Sheriff Jonathan Meyer’s recent resignation. According to Sac County District Court records, 33-year-old Matthew Luverne Birt was arrested Thursday for assault on persons in certain occupations—intent of injury and willful injury causing serious injury, both class C felonies. The criminal complaints filed by the Sac City Police Department show the incident occurred at Meyer’s home on Aug. 25. The affidavit alleges Birt attacked Meyer via punches and kicks to the head and attempted strangulation. Meyer sustained multiple injuries requiring medical treatment, including skull fractures, lacerations, and extensive bruising. Birt was booked into the Sac County Jail and held on a $35,000 bond. Due to the incident involving a Sac County law enforcement officer, Greene County Attorney Thomas Laehn has been appointed to serve as a special prosecutor for this case. Birt is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 15 at the Sac County Courthouse. If convicted of the charges, he faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison and more than $20,000 in fines.
