The Audubon City Council approved of an amendment to city ordinance to allow for residents to have chickens on properties in town. The new language in the ordinance states that community members are allowed up to six chickens on their private property for the use of egg production to benefit the landowner. The chickens are required to remain in a coop, minimum of four-square feet in size per chicken, with a fenced enclosure with a minimum of ten square feet per chicken to allow for movement outside of the covered coop. The coop and enclosure must be placed in the rear yard of the property, and must be located a minimum of 50 feet from any adjacent dwellings. Violations of this ordinance can be prosecuted as either a simple misdemeanor or a municipal infraction, depending of the severity. Council approved the first reading, waiving the second and third readings to pass the ordinance on Aug. 11. A copy of the ordinance can be found included below.
