An open house is scheduled on Tuesday in Jefferson for community members to get a first-hand glance at the old middle/high school being renovated into several housing units. The $8 million renovation project began in June of 2025, transforming the structure built in the 1920’s that was previously used by the Greene County Community School District, sold to Nate Adams, though NGA Ventures LLC, with a proposed plan to create 25 apartments, some being labeled for affordable housing. Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) awarded NGA Ventures $694,343 in workforce housing tax credits back in Sept. 2021. Delays occurred when the State Historic Preservation Office intervened saying the 1950’s gymnasium could not be completely destroyed, which changed the project. A new design was approved in August of last year and final preparations came forward to make this project a reality. A self-guided tour is available for the public on Tuesday, Aug. 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., to view the future 25 units of mostly one and two bedrooms with a few three bedroom apartment options. Attendees are asked to enter through the east doors along South Vine Street. Woodruff Construction was awarded the contract and is expected to have work completed and ready for tenants by June of 2026. This project is made possible with support from the Greene County Development Corporation, the City of Jefferson, and a downtown housing grant.
