CCSD Board Of Education Discusses Hawkeye Ten Conference Invite At Monday’s Meeting

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) is considering an invitation to a new conference, but will receive input before a decision is made. During Monday night’s board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Casey Berlau informed board members that the district received an invite from the Hawkeye Ten Conference last month, and that conference leaders would like a decision made by Sept. 1. Berlau asked for an extension until Oct. 1 to allow for more formal information gathering.

The district is currently in the Raccoon River Conference, which contains ADM, Ballard, Bondurant-Farrar, Boone, Carlisle, Gilbert, North Polk, and Winterset Community School Districts. Berlau says the school size is a contributing factor toward the decision that CCSD will lean toward.

Lewis-Central announced later Monday evening that they will be leaving the Hawkeye Ten Conference to join the Missouri River Conference. The remaining schools in the Hawkeye Ten include: Kuemper Catholic, Harlan, Glenwood, St. Albert, Creston, Clarinda, Denison-Schleswig, Atlantic, with Red Oak and Shenandoah also potentially leaving for the Western Iowa Conference. Berlau says there are other factors that the district is considering before making a recommendation, such as travel time to events.

In the next week or so, Berlau says district administration will send out surveys to coaches and parents to get input on preferences on which conference, as well as hold a public meeting to provide details from information that was gathered. Administration will then provide a recommendation at the next board meeting, Sept. 15 for approval from the Board of Education.
