Sac County Board Of Supervisors Looking To Appoint New County Sheriff At July 22 Meeting

The Sac County Board of Supervisors is looking to appoint a candidate for the vacancy of the Sac County Sheriff’s position at the next supervisor’s meeting. The vacancy was created after current Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure announced that he would retire, with an effective end date of June 26, after almost four decades in his law enforcement career. To fill the position, the supervisors had to choose one of two options: to hold a special election or to appoint someone to fill the open position until the term would end at the next general election in November 2026. The board reviewed the choices during its July 1 meeting and concluded that a special election would cost the county approximately $25,000 on the low end and would also require a significant amount of work for the county auditor’s office to have that individual only serve until November of next year. According to Iowa code, when deciding to appoint, supervisors are required to post a notice of intent in the newspaper, allowing residents of Sac County to understand the plan and provide input to officials. That notice must be published at least ten days before the board’s scheduled date of when the appointment will occur. With the notice in the paper, the Sac County Board of Supervisors is expected to appoint a candidate from the internal applications received on July 22. If no petition from the public is presented requesting a special election within 14 days of the appointment, then the appointee will occupy the county sheriff position until the next general election in 2026.
