As Iowans prepare to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, officials are urging residents to prioritize safety and follow local laws to prevent injuries and fires. Each year, emergency responders across the state respond to firework-related incidents ranging from burns and lacerations to house fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause thousands of injuries nationwide each July, many involving children and teens. To help prevent accidents, officials recommend that fireworks enthusiasts protect themselves and others by following a few simple tips. Always follow local ordinances and only use legal fireworks. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of fire. Never relight a “dud” firework; wait 20 minutes and then soak it in water. Light fireworks one at a time and back away quickly. Never allow young children to handle fireworks, including sparklers. Only use fireworks outdoors and away from people, pets, and structures. Residents are also reminded to be courteous to neighbors and pets and to dispose of used fireworks properly.
