Iowa Law Enforcement Begins Fourth Of July STEP With Focus On Impaired Driving

As fireworks, barbecues, and pool parties mark the Fourth of July, Iowa officials are reminding residents to celebrate safely and avoid impaired driving. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is teaming up with law enforcement agencies across the state for a high-visibility enforcement campaign from July 3-7. Their goal is to prevent fatalities like the nine recorded over last year’s Independence Day weekend, which was the deadliest holiday in Iowa in more than a decade. GTSB Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes says, “We want people to enjoy the holiday and to celebrate responsibly. Impaired driving endangers everyone, and our law enforcement partners know how to spot an impaired driver and will not hesitate to pull them over. If you’re going to drink, plan for a sober ride ahead of time.” To encourage safe choices, the GTSB and Doll Distributing are offering a $10 Uber voucher through the Decide to Ride program, valid statewide from July 3 at 5 p.m. through July 7 at 2 a.m. Officials urge Iowans to designate a sober driver, use a taxi or rideshare, or take advantage of community sober ride programs.
