City Of Pomeroy Issues Water Drinking Warning For Infants And Pregnant Women For High Nitrite Levels

The City of Pomeroy has issued a drinking water warning for specific populations within the city due to elevated levels of nitrite. A water sample collected reported a level of 2.35 mg/L, exceeding the maximum containment level of 1.0 mg/L. While this level will not cause harm to most residents, water should not be consumed by infants under six months old and pregnant women, as they cannot process nitrite as easily and can cause serious illness. Until samples are back down to a safe level, formula, juice, and food should not be prepared with tap water for those who are susceptible. Bottled water is recommended as a safe alternative. Boiling the water is not recommended as the nitrite remains behind after the water evaporates, making it more concentrated. Those with additional questions are asked to contact City Hall by calling 712-468-2411.
