Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered flags in Iowa to half-staff tomorrow (Saturday) to honor a fallen World War II U.S. Army air gunner during his funeral on Saturday. Nineteen-year-old Corporal Melvin L. Huff of Iowa Falls was reported missing in action near the end of the war in January of 1945 in New Guinea. His unit had been attacking enemy positions on Cape Wom and did not return from the assault. Huff’s body was identified and accounted for in July 2024 and is being returned home to his family and hometown. His graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls. Flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Saturday on the State Capitol Building, flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
