The Carroll County Public Health offices will be out at surrounding area pools the next few weeks providing free sunscreen to promote protecting skin this summer season. Starting on Tuesday, Carroll County Public Health staff will be at the Carroll Aquatic Center throughout the day, handing out free bottles of sunscreen. Remaining stops included the Breda City Pool on June 27, Manning Rec Center on July 2 and Coon Rapids Aquatic Center on July 3. Staff will also be at the IHSSA State Baseball tournament at Historic Merchants Park the week of July 21 through the 25. This program is made possible through partnerships and sponsors with the Iowa Cancer Consortium, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and the Melanoma Program at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center to promote healthy skin and reduce the risk of skin cancers. According to Skincancer.org, the risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer later in life doubles with a history of 5 or more sunburns and only one blistering sunburn during childhood and adolescence.
