Due to the dangerously high temperatures forecasted for this week, the Breda American Legion Riders have decided to postpone their annual District 8 Legacy Run. The more than 110-mile ride was initially planned to take off from the Breda American Legion on the morning of Saturday, June 21, but has been rescheduled to Saturday, June 28. Only the date has changed for the ride, which includes stops at Mike’s Bar and Grill in Schleswig, Tiny’s Bar in Mapleton, Buffalo Joe’s Roadhouse in Smithland, and the Country Pumpkin in Boyer, with an endpoint back at the Breda American Legion. Legion Rider Gary Schmitz says the local ride is tied to the American Legion’s National Legacy Run, slated for later this year.

Registration for the District 8 Legacy Run opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, with a cost of $20 per rider and $10 per passenger, which increases to $20 if they want to join in the ride’s poker game. The ride begins at 10 a.m. Schmitz says their event also features door prizes for participants to win.

Schmitz adds the Legacy Run isn’t exclusive to motorcycles. Almost anything with wheels, within reason, can join in the fun. Money raised by the American Legion’s National Legacy Run and the local district events previously supported the Legacy Scholarship for children of veterans killed or wounded in service to the nation. Schmitz says that the fund is now self-sustaining, so proceeds shifted to fund American Legion programs and service officers, who assist veterans and their families navigate the complexities of the VA and veteran benefits.

Again, the 2025 District 8 American Legion Run begins Saturday, June 28, in Breda at 10 a.m., with registration opening at 9 a.m. Additional information is included with this story on our website.
