South Dakota Authorities Released Limited Details From Fatal June 12 Shooting That Killed An Audubon Man

Officials in South Dakota have released limited information from a fatal shooting last week that killed an Audubon man. According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office in Deadwood, S.D., law enforcement was dispatched at approximately 5:22 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, in response to an altercation at a cabin along Highway 385, about 6.5 miles southeast of Lead. Law enforcement says a fight broke out between four men from Iowa and Nebraska who were staying together as a group of UTV riders. Authorities say during the fight, one of the unnamed belligerents discharged a single round from a 9mm handgun, striking 59-year-old Larry Petersen of Audubon. Petersen was transported to Monument Health Lead-Deadwood Hospital, where he later died from his wounds. Authorities have not positively identified the other individuals involved in the fight but note an investigation is still ongoing. Additional information is expected to be released at a later date.
