U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) met this week with students from across Iowa, including four from Carroll High School (CHS), who traveled to Washington, D.C., to compete in the annual National History Day Contest. The contest draws participants from all 50 states, and students present in-depth history projects they’ve researched and developed over several months. The event includes preliminary and final judging rounds, as well as visits to museums and historic sites for additional learning. Grassley says, “As a history lover myself, it was my pleasure to meet with students selected to participate in this distinguished contest. I enjoyed hearing about their projects and seeing the way they engaged with important historical topics. Knowing our history better informs our future. I hope these students will continue to eagerly engage with history and civics even after their competition concludes.” Representing CHS were Kylie Janning, Khushi Patel, Sophia Tidgren, all of Carroll, and Aliya Reed of Arcadia. The team took first place at the Iowa History Day contest earlier this year, qualifying for nationals with their presentation on the impact of women during the Industrial Revolution. Grassley praised the students’ efforts and encouraged them to continue exploring history and civics beyond the competition.
