The City of Schaller in Sac County has been fined by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for violating its wastewater discharge permit and failing to submit required compliance strategies. According to the DNR, Schaller received a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for its lagoon on June 1, 2017, and was required to outline its plans to eliminate chloride and sulfate effluent. State officials say the city repeatedly failed to submit the required annual reports between 2017 and 2024 and continued to release effluent after its original Nov. 1, 2021, compliance date. As a result, the DNR has issued an administrative consent order to the city, assessing a penalty of $2,500. It also requires the City of Schaller to submit its chloride effluent limit compliance plan within 60 days of the order’s effective date.
