City Of Audubon Passed Ordiance Restricting Use Of ‘Jake Brakes’ In City Limits

The Audubon City Council passed an ordinance restricting the use of engine and compression brakes within city limits. During the March 10 city council meeting, a citizen addressed the council stating that he could feel and hear trucks coming through on Highway 71 late at night using engine brakes. While the city currently had a noise nuisance ordinance, they agreed a more specific regulation regarding what is commonly referred to as “jake braking” was needed. City council introduced ordinance 774 at Monday night’s meeting, prohibiting the use of any engine, compression brake or other mechanical exhaust device used to aid in braking or deceleration that results in excessive loud noises. The second and third reading were waived during the meeting, officially adopting the ordinance into law and is now in effect.
