Carroll Athletic Association Proposes Naming Field At Merchants Park After Longtime Groundskeeper

The field at historic Merchants Park in Carroll could have a new name soon in honor of the man who dedicated decades of his life to ensuring every line was perfectly drawn and no blade of grass stood out of place. Barry Bruner, with the Carroll Athletic Association, approached the council Monday evening with the idea of naming it Scott Parcher Field.

Bruner says Parcher poured countless hours of blood, sweat, and tears into maintaining Merchants Park, which not only plays host to the Carroll Tigers and Kuemper Knights during the baseball season but also the Carroll Merchants summer team. Bruner says the Carroll Athletic Association could think of no better way to honor Parcher’s dedication than naming the field after him.

Bruner told the council they don’t need to take just his word for it. He says you could find Parcher at Merchants Park at all hours of the day.

Parcher was recognized in January by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association with the President’s Award for his outstanding dedication to amateur baseball in Carroll and Iowa. Merchants Park is a three-time winner of the Iowa High School Diamond of the Year, mainly due to Parcher’s work. The council did not take action on the request at Monday’s meeting, but they are expected to consider the proposal during their regularly scheduled June 23 meeting.
