The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is crediting grassroots listener engagement for the growing congressional support behind the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act. NAB President Curtis LeGeyt says, “That’s why these bills have more than 60 co-sponsors in the Senate, more than 170 co-sponsors in the House. This isn’t driven by just our work at the National Association of Broadcasters. It’s being driven by our listeners.” The legislation would require automakers to include AM radio in new vehicles or face potential fines, and it has already cleared the Senate Commerce Committee. The NAB launched DependOnAM.com to help listeners contact representatives and learn more about the issue. Support has surged recently, with lawmakers from both parties joining the cause. LeGeyt frames the issue as part of a broader fight for parity between broadcasters and unregulated tech platforms. He says, “We’re not asking for a handout. We’re just asking to compete.” He added that dozens of lawmakers are also pressuring the FCC to modernize outdated regulations, including power restrictions and ownership limitations.
