Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered flags in Iowa to half-staff on Friday for the burial of an Iowan killed on D-Day during World War II. Flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Friday, June 6, for the burial of 21-year-old U.S. Army Pvt. James Lee Harrington of Cincinnati, Iowa, 81 years to the day of his death. Harrington was killed in action when the landing craft he and 200 other soldiers were on collided with an underwater mine as they approached Omaha Beach at Normandy to begin the invasion of mainland Europe. Harrington had previously been buried as unknown in the Normandy American Cemetery. His remains were positively identified in 2023 and returned to his family for burial. Harrington will be buried with full military honors in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery on Friday morning. Flags will be flown at half-staff on the State Capitol Building, on flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
