A local youth trap team, Carroll County Shooting Sports, recently finished in first place as part of an Iowa DNR-sanctioned Olympics-style bunker trap competition. The Scholastic Clay Target program is open to student-athletes from elementary through college. The International Bunker Trap Championships were hosted at the AVAD Hunt Club on Highway 141 near Coon Rapids on May 17 and 18, with Carroll County Shooting Sports taking the top spot in team standings with a score of 254. Bunker trap competitions are shotgun shooting events where participants aim at clay targets launched from a low position in front of them. The targets fly at varying angles and speeds, testing shooters’ accuracy and reflexes. The next championships in Iowa are scheduled for June 2-8 at the Iowa State Trapshooting Association facility in Cedar Falls.
