Nearly 2,000 Iowa National Guard soldiers will begin their deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve at the end of May. Capt. Alan Johnson, commander of the 168th Infantry Regiment’s Alpha Company, says men and women from around the state are shipping out on Wednesday, May 28.
The Iowa National Guard is holding send-off ceremonies for the soldiers in their home communities, and the Carroll area units will host theirs on Wednesday afternoon at the Carroll Athletic Stadium on Grant Road.
That marks the beginning of the Guard’s 12-month deployment. However, Johnson says they have about a month’s training before heading to the Middle East.
Johnson says their mission once they arrive is focused on security and stability in the region.
Johnson adds it would be great for the area’s soldiers to know they have the support of their home communities during their send-off ceremonies. Again, Carroll’s ceremony begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, at the Carroll Athletic Stadium.
