Iowa DNR Reminds Swimmers To Stay Informed About Beach Advisories This Summer

As summer kicks off, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds beachgoers to stay informed about water quality before heading to lakes and beaches. Weekly testing at state beaches helps ensure a safer swimming experience by tracking levels of E. coli and microcystins, toxins produced by harmful algae. Beach advisories are issued not as closures but rather as warnings when bacteria or toxin levels exceed safe thresholds. While most beach visits are safe, high E. coli levels can increase the risk of minor illnesses like nausea or diarrhea, particularly for children and those with weakened immune systems. In 2024, only seven Iowa beaches reported microcystin-related warnings, reflecting a relatively low occurrence statewide. The DNR advises caution when water appears oily or has green, paint-like scum, which is a sign of blue-green algae. Swimmers should also be alert to other risks, such as drowning hazards and water temperatures early in the season. To check current beach advisories, visit www.iowadnr.gov.
