Wellmark Foundation Announces $5 Million In Mental Health Grants For Rural Iowa Schools

The Wellmark Foundation has unveiled a $5 million grant initiative to help rural Iowa schools improve access to behavioral health care for students. The School-Centered Behavioral Health Grant is aimed at addressing critical mental health needs by supporting long-term, school-based solutions in underserved communities. Suicide remains the second leading cause of death among Iowa youth, and rural families often face barriers to care due to distance, limited resources, and inflexible schedules. The grant will allow eligible schools to fund in-school mental health professionals, invest in telehealth technology for remote treatment, and hire administrative staff to manage therapy services. The Wellmark Foundation is encouraging rural schools to apply and play an active role in strengthening the behavioral and physical well-being of Iowa’s youth.
