DNR Reminds Pond Owners To Begin Aquatic Plant Management

Iowa pond owners are encouraged to begin managing aquatic plant growth early this spring to avoid overgrowth that can hinder recreation and unbalance fish populations. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recommends mechanical and chemical methods for controlling aquatic plants, especially when started before growth peaks. Waiting too long can reduce effectiveness and harm water quality. Mechanical options include shading with pond dyes, bottom blanketing with black plastic or weed barriers, plant removal by hand or with tools, and lowering water levels. Pond dyes should be applied early and maintained throughout the season. Chemical herbicides are also effective but must be used with care. The DNR advises pond owners to follow five key steps: identify the plant, measure treatment area, read herbicide labels, understand water use restrictions, and apply correctly—ideally on calm, sunny mornings.
