Approximately 500 gallons of wastewater entered the Boyer River early Sunday morning after a valve malfunction at Smithfield in Denison, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Authorities say the malfunction caused wastewater to flow through an open storm drain into the river. State officials credit Smithfield staff for their quick response in closing the drain to stop the discharge. The DNR’s Atlantic Field Office is monitoring cleanup efforts. Officials advise the public to avoid contact with the Boyer River until cleanup is complete. No dead fish have been reported so far. The DNR will determine appropriate enforcement action after its investigation concludes.
