The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a fish kill in the south branch of Lizard Creek following a chemical leak reported Monday by CJ Bio America in Fort Dodge. According to the DNR, a fertilizer byproduct from the company’s lysine production process leaked into a stormwater channel on the east side of the plant. Although staff initially believed the byproduct was contained, a breach in the berm allowed an unknown amount to flow into nearby surface intakes, eventually reaching the south branch of Lizard Creek, a tributary of the Des Moines River. DNR field staff observed the byproduct and dead fish several miles downstream from the plant. Due to limited access and stream flow conditions, the DNR said installing berms in the creek is not feasible at this time. Water samples have been collected, and the investigation is ongoing. The leak has since been stopped, but downstream users are advised to avoid contact with the creek.
