Iowa’s elected officials responded mostly positively following last night’s (Tuesday) address to a joint session of Congress from President Trump. The 90+ minute address included many facets of his fast-moving administration, such as strengthening the southern border, trade disputes and tariffs, and federal cuts via the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Iowa District 4 Representative Randy Feenstra says President Trump, who took office on Jan. 20, is not wasting a moment of his second presidency.
Feenstra says Trump’s agenda has more to come, and the GOP-controlled House and Senate stand ready to bring it to fruition.
Iowa Attorney General Bird mirrored Feenstra’s positive reaction, saying in a written statement, “He is not taking his foot off the gas. President Trump is making certain that Washington works for America, not the other way around. And as he expertly communicated [Tuesday], our nation is on track to be stronger, safer, greater, and more prosperous than it has ever been.” Sen. Chuck Grassley says, “Since returning to office, President Trump has swept through Washington like a hurricane. He’s making necessary changes to hold bureaucrats accountable, save taxpayer dollars, and end the radical Biden-Harris policies that weakened our country.” Sen. Joni Ernst says, “By cutting the red tape and unleashing the potential of our small businesses, farmers, and workers, the Golden Age of America is within reach. He has taken steps to restore peace through strength and protect the lives of our citizens.” Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart responded to Tuesday night’s address, writing, “Republicans have been in control for 43 days, and they have already lost focus on their promise to bring down prices and grow our economy. Last week, Elon Musk called Social Security a Ponzi scheme, and Iowa’s own Republicans in Congress voted to cut Medicaid. Now, they’re supporting tariffs that will raise the price of gas and groceries and invite retaliation while the farm economy is struggling.” Tuesday’s address marks Trump’s first to Congress in his second term.
