As Iowans begin preparing their tax returns, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is cautioning taxpayers to remain vigilant against scams targeting their refunds and personal information. Common schemes include impersonation scams, phishing emails, and tax identity theft. Scammers often pose as IRS agents, claiming unpaid taxes or offering fraudulent refunds. These impostors may use fake badge numbers, official-looking emails, or Washington, D.C.-based caller IDs to appear legitimate. Victims are pressured to pay immediately via wire transfers, prepaid debit cards, or other untraceable methods. The IRS, however, always initiates contact by mail, not by phone, email, or text. Tax identity theft occurs when scammers file fake returns using stolen Social Security numbers. Victims may not realize the fraud until the IRS informs them of duplicate filings or unfamiliar employer payments. Phishing scams trick taxpayers with emails linking to fraudulent websites that steal sensitive data. To protect yourself, file taxes early, secure returns using the optional IRS-provided Identity Protection PIN, and verify any suspicious communications with the IRS by calling the agency directly. If you suspect tax identity theft, contact the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at identitytheft.gov.
