Sac County Sheriff’s Office one of multiple agencies that responded to hours long standoff Sunday in Storm Lake, resulting in the death of a Storm Lake man. According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at around 8:00 a.m., a Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office deputy performed a traffic stop on a pickup outside of Storm Lake. The driver, 45-year-old Daniel Joseph James Palenik became uncooperative, making threats toward law enforcement then proceed to flee from deputies at a high rate. Palenik was found a short time later, at his home in the 300 block of Oneida Street, barricading himself in his residence. Law enforcement set a perimeter around the home and evacuated surrounding residents. At approximately 4:00 p.m., Palenik fire several rounds at the responding law enforcement, continuing throughout the afternoon and evening, striking vehicles and equipment. Shortly before 3:00 a.m. this (Monday) morning, Palenik fired at law enforcement again, with officers returning fire, striking Palenik. He died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Officers involved in the shooting are currently placed on administrative leave, due to department policy for the duration of the investigation by DCI. Alongside Sac County and Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, the Storm Lake Police Department, Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, Council Bluffs Fire Department, Storm Lake Fire Department, Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, Sioux City Police Department, Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Dodge Police Department, Webster County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office all assisted at the scene with negotiations and tactical support.
