Downtown Carroll Businesses Narrowly Avoid Serious Fire Caused By Electrical Issues Friday Night

No injuries were reported following a fire call Friday evening in downtown Carroll, but it forced multiple businesses to remain closed this weekend. According to Carroll Fire Chief Dan Hannasch, the Carroll Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 5:35 p.m. to the 500 block of N. Adams Street in response to a “hot smell” coming from several businesses on the west side of the downtown district. Hannasch says there was no visible fire when crews arrived on the scene. They quickly determined the smell was caused by an electrical issue, which generated significant heat in the Buckle, Brown’s Shoe Fit Co., and Glik’s stores. Firefighters were forced to cut the power to the affected structures. Electricians from several companies worked Friday evening and most of Saturday to rewire the power supply to isolate the issue and allow the stores to resume operations. Hannasch says, “It is fortunate that we caught the issue before employees closed up shop for the night. It is very likely the electrical issue could have escalated into a full-scale, multi-structure fire had it occurred just a few hours later.” The businesses were able to reopen for regular business on Sunday.
