The Coon Rapids City Council has approved to hold a public hearing in regards to the resurfacing of the Riverside Trail. The council members sought grant opportunities to assist with funding the approximately 2.5-mile-long asphalt trail, with hopes of changing it to a concrete trail. With grant funding applications unsuccessful, the city council looked for other ways to improve the trail at a lower cost. With engineering estimates returned, the city council will pursue the option of milling the existing trail and resurfacing it with a new layer of asphalt instead of concrete. A public hearing will be held on Monday at the next city council meeting to review the plans and specs for the project with the community, forming a contract to send out for bid. A tentative schedule for approving a bid has been slated for the Oct. 7 city council meeting, with the actual resurfacing project started in the spring of 2025 and completed before August of the same year.
