The Sac County Conservation Board Has Come To An Agreement With The DNR To Keep The Sauk Rail Trail All Concrete

The Sac County Conservation Board (SCCB) and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has come to an agreement in regards to the repairs of the Sauk Rail TraiL. The current trail needed repairs by the Black Hawk Marsh Dike due to cracking and buckling in the concrete, making it unsafe for trail users. The SCCB reached out to the DNR as the portion of that trail lays on DNR property for a more long-term solution. The initial proposal from the DNR was to replace that section of concrete with crushed limestone. The Sauk Rail Trail Association (SRTA) and the SCCB both thought this would be a regression backwards and the SRTA petitioned the proposal. The SCCB will be removing the portion of the trail on the dike and creating a new concrete route on or along the established public DNR access road for the East/West section of the dike, connecting to the existing Sauk Rail Trail. The removal of the current trail by the dike will occur after July 4 of this year, and SCCB plans to start paving the trail next year.
