Two Carroll Rec Center lifeguards will be recognized for their life-saving efforts during Monday’s Carroll City Council Meeting. Sophia Polking and Carter Sporrer were the lifeguards on duty when an emergency occurred on Dec. 20 last year. Director of Parks and Recreation Chad Tiemeyer says their quick thinking and actions saved a life that day.

Lifeguards on duty that day were Sophia Polking, a college student at the University of Iowa who has lifeguarded at the Rec for the past few years, and Carter Sporrer, a high school student working there for the past year. Tiemeyer says they both followed protocol for emergencies and had everything under control within a short amount of time.

Tiemeyer says a different employee was recognized last year for two life-saving occurrences at the staff level. In the future, Tiemeyer wants the public to know there is more to lifeguarding than people imagine.

Polking and Sporrer will be recognized on Monday at the Carroll City Council Meeting at 5:15 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers. If unable to attend the live meeting, a streaming option is available on the City’s YouTube channel. A link to the channel is included with this story on our website.
