St. Anthony Regional Hospital recently received a grant from a children-centric charity to purchase new equipment for newborns visiting the emergency department. The contribution from Variety—the Children’s Charity will be used to buy a new General Electric (GE) Panda Warmer, which is an infant-care device that helps regulate temperature and provides respiratory support in a setting that allows doctors and nurses to perform required procedures efficiently. Over the last two decades, Iowa has seen the closure of many rural obstetrical (OB) units, leading to an increase in the number of out-of-hospital and emergency room deliveries. The St. Anthony Birth Place currently has several Panda Warmers in their unit that can be transported to the ER when needed. However, having an additional dedicated unit will reduce wait times and improve patient outcomes. Vice President of Patient Services Anita Baker says, “As we see an increase in the number of births at St. Anthony, it is important to keep our current Panda Warmers readily available in The Birth Place. Receiving this grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity will meet the increasing need to have this specialized equipment in our ED, minimizing any delay in providing care to our tiniest, most vulnerable patients. We are grateful and thank Variety- the Children’s Charity!”
