Funeral Service for 84-year-old, Bonita McChesney of Lake City will be held at 2pm Thursday at the Lake City Union Church. Visitation will be at 1pm til service time at the church. Burial will follow in Lake City Cemetery. Lampe & Powers Funeral Home of Lake City, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.
Bonita McChesney, age 84, of Lake City, Iowa passed away at Accura Healthcare Lake City (Shady Oaks) on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Bonita Darlene Davis was born on September 19, 1938, to parents Fred and Myrtle (Brown) Davis in Jolley, IA. She grew up on a farm outside of Jolley where she attended grade school up until ninth grade.
On January 6, 1957, Bonita was united in marriage to Harold McChesney. This union was blessed with six children: Judy, JoAnn, Jimmy, Brenda, Bonnie Jean, and Becky. Together they raised their family in Lake City where Bonita was an in-home daycare provider up until her retirement in 1999. In her younger years, Bonita loved to roller-skate and that’s how she met Harold. She sang and played accordion in the Western Trio Band with her husband and mother. Bonita and Harold were also in a bowling league together and loved to travel around to Flea Markets to buy and sell things.
Bonita loved to stay busy and enjoyed being a Girl Scout Leader for several years and loved making floats for the parade every year. She also volunteered at Central School. Bonita loved to bake, play cards, be in her garden, and loved to sing. She also had a horse named Mickey that she loved to ride.
Those left to cherish her memory include children: Judy Haynes of Manchester, IA, JoAnn (LaVerne) Hammond of Fredericksburg, IA, Brenda (Glenn) Summers of Glidden, IA, Becky (Clancy) O’Tool of Lake City, IA; grandchildren: Mindy Carr of Manchester, IA, Susan (Clarke) Beavers of Raleigh, NC, Michael (Anita) Brown of Des Moines, IA, Theresa (Todd) Johnson of Denver, IA, LaVerene Hammond Jr. of Standwood, WA, Christine (Tom) Billingsley of Janesville, IA, Glenn Summers Jr. of Irwin, IA, Steven (Sara) Summers of Churdan, IA, Cody Summers of Glidden, IA, Joshua (Presley) McChesney of Lohrville, IA, Brittany Schneider of West Des Moines, IA, R. J. (Jared) Staben of Omaha, NE; many great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Bonita was preceded in death by her husband Harold McChesney; children: Bonnie Jean and Jimmy; parents Fred and Myrtle Davis; sisters: Viola Brown and Mable Rost; brother Leonard Davis; grandson Robert Brown; and son-in-law Larry Haynes.
