Arlene Barbara Thelen was born January 22, 1936 to Raymond and Barbara Thelen of Glidden, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm with her brother and four sisters and graduated from Glidden High School in 1954. On October 19, 1957, Arlene married Raphael “Ray” Wolterman at the Fort Chaffee, Arkansas base chapel. They made their home in Carroll, Iowa where they bought Kingston Distributing Co. and operated it as Wolterman Distributing Co. They were blessed with five children who have fond memories growing up working in the family business which distributed Sealtest, Meadow Gold, Kemps and Wells Blue Bunny ice cream. In addition to doing the bookwork for Wolterman Distributing Co., Arlene also worked at H & R Block for over thirty years and Swan Lake State Park. In their free time, Arlene and Ray enjoyed dancing, traveling, and frequent family vacations to Branson, Missouri and Lake Okoboji.
Arlene, a devout Catholic, was an active member of Holy Spirit Parish and the Iowa Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She enjoyed volunteering at the St. Anthony Auxiliary Gift and Coffee Shop and for the RSVP program. She was an avid bowler and thoroughly enjoyed her time spent at State Bowling in Fort Dodge with her team. She also enjoyed golfing, international travel, fishing with Zola, bingo and of course, frequenting the casinos.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Peggy Carlson of Mapleton, Daryl Wolterman of Omaha, Nebraska, Beth (Lynn) Wenck of Lidderdale, Todd (Terri) Wolterman of Omaha, Nebraska and Craig (Courtney) Wolterman of Ankeny; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters; Jan (Ed) Olson of Randolph, Kansas and Phyllis (Larry) Broich of Leon.
Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Ray in 1998; parents, Ray and Barbara Thelen, parents-in-law, AJ and Elizabeth Wolterman; a brother, Larry; and sisters, Shirley, Darlene (“Dee”) and Betty.
Arlene will be missed by many other family and friends.
