Public transportation is often thought of as only an option in urban population centers, but since 1978, Western Iowa Transit (WIT) from Region XII Council of Governments has helped residents in the six-county area get to where they need to be. Transit Director Matt Cleveland says their services are most often utilized by older adults or people with disabilities, but anybody needing a ride can use WIT.

According to Cleveland, WIT transported more than 102,000 riders over 690,000 miles during Fiscal Year (FY) 2023. For perspective, that is the equivalent of WIT transporting more than the combined population of the six-county service area three times the distance from Earth to the Moon over the course of last year. And Cleveland says it is all part of their goal to help people maintain their independence.

He adds that their rates begin at $7 per trip, and they’ll take riders anywhere in the service area, so long as you notify them at least 24 hours in advance. Cleveland says they are also beginning to partner with local businesses to transport customers and employees.

Cleveland adds that they are hoping to expand their transportation offerings, be it individual riders or contracted routes. To learn more about WIT and what they can do for you, log on to www.RegionXIICOG.org or call 712-792-9914.
