Sac County’s Berg Family Recognized With Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award

The Berg family of Sac County has been named the latest recipient of the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award. The award was presented by Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Grant Menke on behalf of Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig on Friday at their family operation southwest of Early. Berg Farm Enterprises, a diversified family farm, is managed by Josh and Kelli Berg. Much of the family is dedicated to the farm, as they employ Josh’s father, Emmet, and Kelli’s cousin, Chad, as well as four part-time employees and local high school students. Their farming operation includes corn, soybeans, finisher turkeys, brooder poults, and the sale of Wyffels Hybrids. The Bergs have demonstrated exceptional animal care, utilizing advanced technology to create a low-stress environment. They prioritize animal welfare and maintain strict biosecurity protocols to safeguard against diseases such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The Bergs are also committed to sustainable farming practices, including no-till methods, crop rotation, and implementing measures like terraces, buffer strips, and grassed waterways to minimize nutrient loss. Their dedication to environmental stewardship has contributed to healthier soil and water quality. Beyond their farm, Josh and Kelli actively participate in community organizations such as the Sac County Farm Bureau and the Iowa Turkey Federation. They are also involved in their local school and church, with Kelli serving as a past president of the Sac County Farm Bureau and Josh holding leadership positions in the Iowa Turkey Federation. The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award recognizes livestock farmers who prioritize environmental stewardship and community engagement. The award is named in honor of Gary Wergin, a respected farm broadcaster.
