Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling limiting the Environmental Protection (EPA) Agency’s ability to regulate landowners’ property via the Waters of the United States (WOTUS). Iowa Senator Joni Ernst says this is a big victory.
Ernst says the rule gave WOTUS the ability to regulate 97 percent of Iowa farmland before it was changed.
Ernst adds that Congress must go back and discuss what falls under WOTUS.
Ernst made her comments Friday in Willey. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig released a statement Thursday following the ruling: “The decision better defines the regulatory scope of the federal government as it relates to America’s land and water. Curtailing this expensive and burdensome federal overreach gives Iowa farmers the confidence to continue using modern farming practices and will allow further acceleration of important conservation work across our state.”
