Marvin “Pete” Jacobs of Auburn

Marvin “Pete” Jacobs, age 87 of Auburn, IA, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Fonda Specialty Care in Fonda, IA.  Marvin Henry Jacobs was born on December 5, 1935, to parents Arvel and Augusta (Frank) Jacobs in Lidderdale, IA.  He grew up in Auburn where he attended grade school at Auburn Jackson 5 and graduated from Auburn High School, class of 1954.  Pete was the varsity catcher of the 1953 Auburn Tigers State baseball championship team.  As a senior, Pete represented Auburn High School as the King for the Military ball at the Carroll High school gymnasium.

Pete enlisted to serve his country in the United States Army on June 16, 1955.  He began his service with basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.  He was stationed in Korea, earning rank SP3, and worked as the mess hall cook.  Pete shared memories of pheasant hunting at the DMZ and sitting on Freedom Bridge.  He attained the second highest score of 213 in his Company firing a M-1 rifle.  Pete was honorably discharged on March 27, 1957.

Following Pete’s military service, he continued his education at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Science in 1964.  While attending NWMS, Pete was a member of the Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity.

On May 26, 1963, Pete was united in marriage to Darlene Presley at the Presbyterian Church in Auburn.  This union was blessed with three children: Jeffrey, Scott, and Dana.  Pete and Dar raised their family in the Creston, Spencer, Hinton, and Auburn areas. Pete was a talented furniture upholsterer for several years.  He worked for Custom Farm Service in Fonda and then as a loan officer for GAB.  Pete sold farm equipment for Arts Way Manufacturing and Rounder skid loaders. He became partner/owner of the Mill City Loader Corporation, where they manufactured the Raider skid loader.  In 1978, Pete and Darlene returned to Auburn to farm the family ground.  He continued to help his son with farming activities until 2020.

In his free time, Pete enjoyed shooting pool, playing various card games, cribbage, ping pong, and reading books of all sorts.  The Auburn Library kept him well stocked and was ready with a new book every time he walked in the door.  You could also find him on the golf course, especially on Thursdays playing in the “Old Farts golf league.” Most of all, Pete enjoyed his time spent with his family and grandchildren.  He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Jeffrey (Sandra) Jacobs of Clarion, IA, Scott (Michelle) Jacobs of Auburn, IA, and Dana (Shawna) Jacobs of Springfield, MN; grandchildren: Austin, Savannah (Aaron Grage), Carter, Cole, Spencer, Evan, Riley, Grace, and Molly; in-laws: Warren Dean Presley, Donovan (Carol) Presley, Doris (DeLoss) Davis, and Craig Presley; many other extended family members and friends.
