According to County Attorney John Werden, the biggest threat to Carroll County currently is the influx of powerful and potentially lethal narcotics into area communities. Carroll County is fortunate to have a very low violent crime rate compared to the rest of the nation, but Werden says a different type of danger is on the rise.

Werden adds fentanyl is so strong, medical professionals only use four micrograms, or four-millionths of a gram (0.00004 g), under close observation during surgeries. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), a dose as small as two milligrams can be deadly. Werden says local law enforcement does everything they can to prevent these drugs from circulating, but they are unable to address the root cause.

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) shows Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) seized over 461 pounds of fentanyl between October 2021 and August 2022. A single pound of the narcotic has the potential to kill nearly 200,000 people. Werden, who is running unopposed for reelection for Carroll County Attorney, made his comments Wednesday during the Carroll Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum.
