The Carroll County Conservation Board will soon take over management of the historic Carrollton Heritage Park northeast of Dedham. The park is the site of the former Carroll County seat, located about a mile west of the Timber Avenue/280th Street intersection. It has been maintained for decades by the Carrollton Community Heritage Club. Conservation Director Jason Christensen says the club approached the Conservation Board at a recent meeting to gauge their interest in overseeing the property.
The original schoolhouse and general store were torn down several years ago after they were deemed unsafe. All that stands there now is a late 1800s windmill, a bell tower, and informational signage. According to Christensen, the Heritage Club’s membership is growing older, and it is becoming increasingly challenging for them to maintain the area.
Christensen indicated it would be relatively easy for Carroll County Conservation to take over management, as it would add only two acres to their seasonal workload.
The supervisors voted unanimously to accept the Carrollton Community Heritage Club donation. The issue will be forwarded to County Attorney John Werden to oversee the deed transfer. The property will be transitioned into a county park in the coming months.
