Iowa Department Of Agriculture Lifts Restrictions On Poultry Exhibitions At Fairs And Other Gatherings

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has lifted the order banning live bird exhibitions in response to the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak (HPAI) earlier this year. Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, says, “Today’s announcement is a welcome sign of continued progress in our state’s efforts to effectively manage avian influenza and protect Iowa’s poultry flocks. While efforts will continue to prevent additional virus spread, we are pleased to resume poultry sales and exhibitions; a step made possible by our ability to respond quickly from the start.” State officials issued the order banning exhibitions and shows on March 23 after a half-dozen commercial and backyard flocks tested positive for HPAI. At least 13 other sites were exposed to HPAI over the next two months, the most recent in Bremer County on May 2. Now that 30 days have passed since the last confirmed instance, the order is being allowed to expire. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the outbreaks have affected nearly 13.4 million birds in Iowa. Producers are asked to remain vigilant in their flock monitoring and biosecurity procedures. Suspected HPAI cases should be reported to the Iowa Department of Agriculture by calling 515-281-5305.
