During National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, the family and friends of Tom Scharfenkamp created an online challenge in his memory. Tori Staley, Tom’s daughter, decided to honor her dad and do 45 squats a day plus walk or run 40 miles in the month and donate to help local cancer patients. She shared her ideas on social media, and friends and family joined in on her pursuits. Anne Collison of Basic Fitness Studio in Carroll organized the registrations and collected the donations, which led to many of her studio clients also participating, totaling 81 individuals. Each participant donated $40 and received a t-shirt once the challenge was completed. The $2,500 worth of proceeds went to Katie Decker with Carroll SuperDraft. The money will provide St. Anthony Cancer Center patients with groceries, gas, car repairs, medication, and more.
