High Winds Responsible For Three Accidents Saturday In Sac County

The Sac County Sheriff’s Office was busy Saturday afternoon as high winds caused three motor vehicle accidents. According to law enforcement, the first incident occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Highway 175 between Gard and Hope Avenues near Odebolt. A 2019 Toyota Tundra, operated by Dylan Malcom of Sioux City, was pulling an enclosed utility trailer when a wind gust caused the trailer to fishtail. The truck entered the south ditch and rolled. Malcom was uninjured, but there was an estimated $10,000 in damage to the vehicle and trailer. Authorities responded to U.S. Highway 20 and Yankee Avenue an hour later in response to a semi-tractor trailer that had blown over and blocked traffic. The operator, Wanaw Bayible of Sioux Falls, S.D., told law enforcement he had lost control of the 2016 Freightliner after the high wind blew over the empty trailer he was pulling. Bayible sustained minor injuries but refused medical treatment. Another semi-tractor trailer tipped on Highway 20 less than a half-hour later near the intersection with Xavier Avenue. The driver, Ricky Derifield of Evansdale, says a strong wind gust pushed the 2016 Freightliner onto its side. The semi came to rest in the center median. Derifield did not report any injuries. The Odebolt, Sac City, and Lytton Fire Departments and Sac County Emergency Medical Services also responded to these incidents.
