Iowa Department Of Agriculture Confirms HPAI In Guthrie And Hamilton Counties

State officials confirmed Tuesday Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has spread to two more Iowa counties. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), inspectors identified the virus in a commercial turkey flock in Hamilton County and a commercial layer flock in Guthrie County. An estimated 1.5 million hens will need to be euthanized at the Guthrie County site, which is Iowa’s ninth confirmed outbreak. At least 16 other states have also confirmed HPAI in their commercial poultry populations. Flock owners are encouraged to prevent contact between their animals and wild birds and report any unusual illnesses or deaths to state and federal officials by calling 515-281-5305.
