Leaders from more than two dozen local school districts, cities, counties, and other public entities will be treated to pie from Iowa State Auditor, Rob Sand, for their participation last year in the Public Innovations and Efficiencies (PIE) program. Entries from 84 counties, 310 cities, and 121 school districts were received, marking a 55-percent increase from previous entries. Sand introduced the PIE program in 2019 to cut waste in publicly funded organizations, save taxpayers money, and share successful ideas with other areas in Iowa. Last year’s cost-saving measures range from installing solar panels to generate energy to simply turning off lights, computers, and other equipment when not in use. Sand says, “Ultimately, the PIE program has the potential to unlock hundreds of millions of dollars in savings for communities across our state.” He will hand-deliver a pie to the chosen participants later this in recognition of their efforts to give Iowa taxpayers the best return on investment. According to Sand, the program has been so successful Mississippi State Auditor, Shad White, is replicating it in their state. A list of some local organizations to be recognized can be found included below.
