Local school districts are reminding parents the deadline to file for open enrollment applications in Iowa is a week from today (Tuesday). The March 1 deadline is applicable for students in first through 12th grade. Families with children entering school for the first time as a kindergartener have until Sept. 1 to file. High school students who open enroll will be ineligible for varsity-level contests and competitions for the first 90 school days after their transfer; however, some exceptions are permitted. Parents and guardians will be responsible for the transportation of open-enrolled students, but assistance is available for students on an Individualized Education Program (IEP). More information on open enrollment can be found by visiting the Iowa Department of Education website, a link to which is included below, or by contacting the receiving district office directly.
