The Kuemper Knights were able to get plenty of baskets to go their way against Clarinda in the first half, but they did some of their best work in the second half in their win Tuesday night.
The Knights got started in the first quarter with some good looks as they got out to a 12-8 lead going into the second quarter. While they’d find ways to score, Kuemper were not without some flaws. Knights Head Coach Tyler Tryon says his team gave up some high post mid post shots early on in the first half and missed some easy buckets. The Knights gave the Cardinals a pretty big break in the second quarter, allowing them to gain some lost ground, but Kuemper was still able to hold on to their lead going into halftime at 25-20.
Kuemper came back from the halftime break and adjusted well defensively, keeping the Cardinals to a mere two points in the third quarter while recording a double digit score to extend their lead to 39-22. Coach Tryon says the Knights did a much better job of getting into passing lanes and scoring transition lay ups. The Knights continued to ride their scoring momentum into the fourth quarter where, again, allowed Clarinda to make up for some lost scoring while staying ahead of the Cardinals. The biggest performer of the second half for the Knights was Frannie Glynn who had 12 second half points. Despite allowing 11 points in the final eight minutes of the contest, Kuemper only allowed 13 total second half points as they got past Clarinda by a final score of 56-33.
Other notable performances include Catherine Mayhall who had a team high 20 points along with eight rebounds, five assists, and eight steals. Aubrey Heuton hit three 3s in this game, recording 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals. And Akuet Malek had a great defensive game with eight rebounds and eight blocks. The Knights will improve to 4-11 overall on the season and 3-6 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. Kuemper will conclude their week of competition with a home game on Friday, January 21st where they will play host to Creston.

Carroll hung tough in the 1st quarter against the third ranked Comets of North Polk. trailing by two heading into the 2nd quarter. Cold shooting and turnovers turned the tide in favor of North Polk as they pulled away to lead by 17 at half and went on to win by 30 as Carroll fell to 5-7 overall and 2-7 in the Raccoon River Conference.
Katelyn Aden found Camryn Schable for a bucket early and Josie Ayala had a nifty pass from the left block to Addison Klocke on the right block as Carroll tied North Polk at two and four. The Comets answered with a 7-1 run, but Carroll fought back. After a free throw by Katelyn Aden, Josie Ayala scored, and Hannah Jorgensen found Ava Gross for a three from the corner and Carroll trailed 11-10 late in the 1st quarter. Carroll had two possessions with a chance to take the lead but weren’t able to and North Polk took a two-point lead into the 2nd quarter.
Ava Gross dished off an assist to Addison Klocke early in the 2nd quarter, keeping Carroll close at 17-14. North Polk took control from that point with a 9-0 run that put the Comets up 26-14. Addison Klocke scored again but Carroll never got within ten the rest of the game. The Tigers were outscored 35-9 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined. The score in the 1st and 4th quarter combined was 29-25 in favor of North Polk. Camryn Schable did get on a run for the Tigers 2nd half, hitting three-threes. North Polk outscored Carroll 36-12 from beyond the arc.
Camryn Schable led Carroll with 11 points, Addison Klocke added 8 points and 4 rebounds. Josie Ayala had a team high 7 rebounds and Ava Gross had 4 rebounds.
The Tigers head to Harlan on Thursday.

IKM-Manning made it back-to-back wins for their week of competition as they got past AHSTW with a strong second half performance Tuesday night.
Coming off their strong win over Riverside Monday, the Wolves continued where they left off with some strong offensive quarters. The Wolves started off with a double digits first quarter, leading the Vikings 15-12 going into the second quarter. Both teams had their lowest scoring quarter in the second, but the Wolves still found ways to score and extended their lead to 22-17. Mable Langel had another strong performance against the Vikings as she got 16 points along with six rebounds. Speaking of Doyle, she also had 16 points to tie for the team high in scoring, and also matched Bailee Germer with five steals, a team high.
IKM-Manning kept their game up into the second half, starting with a close, but good 12-9 third quarter to keep ahead of AHSTW 34-26. While the Vikings had close scoring quarters with the Wolves, the Wolves’ defense was the difference maker. IKM-Manning Gene Rasmussen says his team had another strong defensive night against AHSTW, which included 13 steals. The Wolves rounded out a good night with another strong performance in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Vikings 14-11 to come away with the 49-37 victory. IKM-Manning will improve to 5-8 overall on the season and 5-6 in the Western Iowa Conference.
The Wolves round out their week of competition with a road game on Friday, January 21st against Tri-Center.

The Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders came away with a massive win over Rolling Valley Conference foe West Harrison Tuesday night.
In the first quarter, the Crusaders dominated on both sides of the ball, keeping West Harrison scoreless as they went on the score 15 points. Coon Rapids Bayard offense didn’t slow down in the second quarter, instead they matched their first quarter performance with another 15-point quarter performance to take a 30-4 lead going into halftime. Coon Rapids Bayard Head Coach Kaitlyn McAlister says her team tried some new things on defense and were able to locate some weaknesses to work on in later games. The offensive powerhouse of the Crusaders was Brynn Bass who led the team with 25 points.
The Crusaders kept their momentum rolling into the second half with their best scoring quarter in the third, going 17-5, keeping West Harrison on their toes. The Crusader’s offense in this game was able to drain six three pointers and they had a good night from the free throw line, with Megan Gray going three for three and Breeley Clayburg going five of six. In the final eight minutes of the contest, the Crusaders were able to get all of their players into the stat book with their bench players getting some playing time as Coon Rapids Bayard defeated West Harrison 58-12. The Crusaders will improve to 7-5 overall on the season and 6-2 in the Rolling Valley Conference.
Coon Rapids Bayard will round out their week of competition with another conference game at home on Friday, January 21st against Woodbine.

South Central Calhoun had a defensively strong game against Twin Lakes foe Pocahontas Area Tuesday night to grab their 11th win of the season.
The Titans didn’t get out to the start they wanted to as the Indians broke out with a 12-9 lead after the first quarter concluded. Past that slow start, the Titans exploded offensively with a big 17-6 second quarter to take the lead with confidence at 26-18 at halftime. South Central Calhoun’s defensive effort gave their scorers a chance to get their team ahead. As a team, the Titans had 18 steals and 29 rebounds. Five different players for the Titans had three or more steals, with Emma Anderson leading the team with four steals.

The Titans kept attacking the rim and bringing home points as they’d have their best quarter of the game in the third quarter. The Indians were brought to a stalemate with two lone points to their name as South Central Calhoun put up 20 points and extended their lead to 46-20. Pocahontas Area, though, wasn’t done putting up a fight as they had their best quarter in the fourth and took over the last moments of the game. The Indians went 17-9 in the final eight minutes, and while threatening a late game comeback, their poor performance in the second and third quarter was their downfall. The Titans grabbed their 11th victory of the season and third conference win as they defeated the Indians 55-37.
Other notable performances from this game were Sayer Steig who had a great night offensively with 16 points and six rebounds and Riley Batta who did a bit of everything with 11 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and a block. The Titans will improve to 11-2 overall on the season and 3-2 in the Twin Lakes Conference. The Titans have another conference game coming up on Thursday, January 20th at home against Alta Aurelia.

Audubon had another close game against a top conference team as they fell by three points to the Western Iowa Conference’s top team Treynor Tuesday night.
The Wheelers and Cardinals had a low scoring affair in a large portion of the first quarter with Audubon holding on to a 3-2 lead until Trynor drained a three pointer to grab the lead at 5-3. Audubon grabbed six more points while Treynor was able to keep their close lead after the first quarter at 11-9. The Wheelers had an opportunity in the second half to retake the lead as they tied the contest at 14 and they did with a three pointer to retake the lead at 17-14. Treynor re-tied the game at 17 points, retook the lead at 18-17, and Audubon was able to tie the game once again at 20 once halftime rolled around. Aleah Hermansen took as many opportunities as she could to score and ended the night with 21 points to her stat line. Jaci Christensen also had a solid night, scoring in double digits with 11 points.
In the third quarter, both teams took turns one-upping each other going point for point. Audubon started with a three pointer to take the lead at 23-22 and extended it to 26-22 with another three. Treynor slowly climbed back to tie the game at 26 and both teams ended the quarter the same way they started it, tied at 29 apiece. Both teams had a barnburner of a fourth quarter, as this time Audubon had to claw back. The Cardinals grabbed the lead at 31-29 and didn’t slow down, quickly extending that lead to 38-30. The Wheelers’ defense was able to slow down Treynor’s scoring enough for them to go on a 9-2 run and cut down that lead to 40-39. The Cardinals snapped their scoring drought with a three pointer to get back up 43-39. Audubon’s last chance to tie the game came when they cut down the Cardinals’ lead to 45-42, but both teams traded baskets and Treynor held on barely by a final score of 47-44. The Wheelers will fall to 9-6 overall on the season and 5-3 in the Western Iowa Conference.
Audubon has another conference challenge coming up on Thursday January 20th when they take on Tri-Center at home.

The East Sac Raiders had an opportunity to tie up their game against West Bend Mallard in the third quarter, but the Wolverines stayed ahead in their contest Tuesday night.
Both teams started off fairly slow in the scoring department, but the Wolverines held the advantage by five points at 8-3 after one quarter of the play. West Bend Mallard picked up the pace quickly in the second quarter with East Sac unable to come up with too many answers. The Wolverines went 18-8 scoring against the Raiders to take a 26-11 lead into halftime. Despite some early game hiccups, the Raiders still had two players end the night in double figures, Meredith Brown had 10 points along with eight rebounds and three steals, and Carly Fischer had a team high 12 points.
In the second half, the Raiders were the ones to get off to a good start. They’d get within six points of the Wolverine lead in the third quarter, but thanks to back to back three pointers, West Bend Mallard stayed ahead of the Raiders by a score of 36-26. After a successful third quarter, the Raiders were only able to match the score of the Wolverines in the fourth quarter, meaning West Bend Mallard was able to pull away with the 45-35 victory. East Sac Head Coach Jason Phillips says as a team, the Raiders went three for 16 from behind the arc and couldn’t get back from that second quarter performance. The Raiders continue their week of competition as they are in non-conference action on Thursday, January 20th against MVAOCOU at home.

The Ar-We-Va Rockets had the tall task of taking on the top dog of the Rolling Valley Conference Exira-EHK Tuesday night, where they had some high points, but ultimately fell.
The Spartans got off to a big start against the Rockets as they got out 25-1 to start the first half. Ar-We-Va Head Coach Jeremy Smith said the press that Exira-EHK ran gave his team trouble from the get-go and made it hard to get out of that hole. The Rockets had much better scoring success in the second quarter as they got into double digits with 11 points but fell behind the Spartans going into halftime with a score of 46-12. Timberlen Koch had the better defensive night among the Rockets squad, recording five steals. Sophie Jackson and Delaney Schurke gave Ar-We-Va some good rebounds as both recorded four rebounds each.
The Spartan’s aggressive offense worked well again in the third quarter as they’d once again dominate Ar-We-Va with a 14-0 scoring quarter and lead 58-12 going into the final quarter. With the large lead built up, the Spartans were able to cruise in the fourth quarter and come away with a 67-20 win over Ar-We-Va. The Rockets round out their week of competition as they travel to take on Paton Churdan on Thursday, January 20th.

The Paton Churdan Rockets had the tough task of going up against one of the top teams so the Rolling Valley Conference, CAM Anita, and while getting one of their players almost 20 points, fell to the Cougars Tuesday.
The Cougars’ might in the conference was apparent from the start as they got out 26-9 after the first quarter and got up 46-16 at halftime. Despite being down by a big deficit, the Rockets had two players who put in some great work. Emma Stream had a decent night with nine points and four rebounds, while Carmyn Paup did a little of everything, recording a team high 18 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. The Cougars continued their scoring streak in the second half with a 17-6 third quarter and finished it off with a 12-5 performance in the fourth quarter. The large lead built up in the first half allowed CAM Anita to grab a win over Paton Churdan 75-27. The Rockets continue their week of conference play as they play host to Ar-We-Va on Thursday January 20th.
