The Carroll Tigers picked up a large win over a tall and lanky Storm Lake squad Saturday evening to improve to 3-1 overall on the season. 

The Tigers started off with an electrifying start to the contest with a 9-0 scoring run that soon led to them leading 25-10 at the beginning of the second quarter. Evan Hammer got off to a great start with 10 points scored in that first quarter, with Nick Macke giving him some good support with a three pointer and five points scored. Storm Lake started to come back a bit in the second quarter behind the scoring of Sam Devergsten and Sam Slight. Carroll still won the second quarter scoring at 16-14 and held on to a strong 41-24 lead at halftime.

The Tornadoes started off with a zone defense in the first half, but when they switched to a man-on-man approach, the Tigers had some issues adjusting. The Tiger and Tornadoes both scored nine points in the third quarter, the lowest scoring quarter for either team up to that point. Carroll had difficulties finding passing lanes and only grabbed a single three pointer thanks to Bryce Berlau. The fourth quarter was another sluggish start for the Tigers, but they started to pick up the pace with the 50-33 lead. Ethan Langeling hit another three pointer for Carroll as did Berlau. Those two shots along with some strong performances from the Tiger bench solidified the quarter for the Tigers as they’d go 21-8 in the final quarter and take a 71-41 victory home with them over Storm Lake.

Five different Carroll players got into double digit points on the night. Evan Hammer led the team with 12 points, Nick Macke, Ethan Langeling, and Caden Kock all had 11 points, and Kaleb Booth added 10 points to the Tigers total. Carroll will improve to 3-1 overall on the season and will be on the road on Tuesday, December 14th to take on Winterset to start off their week of competition.

Van Meter at Kuemper

Kuemper held on to their close lead going into halftime against Van Meter, but the Bulldogs ended up getting the better of the Knights in Saturday’s match up. 

Michael Pottebaum kept the offense for Keumper up going into the second quarter as he hit a big three pointer with 15 second left in the first quarter. Van Meter brought back a strong core of players from the previous season, so the Knights had to keep up with a strong Bulldog team. The Knights did just that as they matched Van Meter at eight points each going into the second quarter. Kuemper started off the second quarter with a 5-0 scoring run that got them up 13-8. Both offenses started to come alive after that lengthy run from Kuemper, but it was the Knights who held onto their new lead at 28-24 at halftime. Both Michaels for Kuemper, Pottabum and Kasperbauer, sparked the Knight’s offense with a pair of threes each as Kasperbauer led the team in the first half with seven points. 

To start off the second half, Van Meter woke up from a long scoring drought to take the lead over Kuemper and win the third quarter easily at 20-9, leading 44-37 going into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs continued to ride their new wave of momentum into the fourth quarter as they once again outscored the Knights 23-13 and pulled away in the second half with not only the lead but the overall game; Bulldogs won with a final score of 67-50. 

Individually for the Knights, Dawson Gifford led his team with 15 points and added eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Kasperbauer also had a good night with 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists. The Knights fall to 0-4 on the season and will be on the road on Monday, December 13th to take on Red Oak.

South Central Calhoun at GTRA

South Central Calhoun had a tough time against GTRA in the second and fourth quarter of their match up, but ultimately pulled away victorious on Saturday evening.

The Titans of South Central Calhoun got out to a strong start in the first quarter, getting up 19-9 over GTRA early on. The GTRA Titans, though, mounted a strong second quarter against South Central Calhoun, outscoring them 14-13, but still trailing 32-23 at halftime. South Central Calhoun in this game had three guys put up big numbers, with Eli Wheelock leading the pack with 21 points overall in this game, with plenty of help from Joe Clark who grabbed 12 rebounds to aid the Titans. 

The third quarter was the lowest scoring quarter for both teams, but it was South Central Calhoun still outscoring GTRA 11-5 and leading 43-28. The fourth quarter is where GTRA started to play catch up and almost got the better of South Central Calhoun in the fleeting moments of the contest. GTRA’s massive quarter ended with them going 20-13, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead over South Central Calhoun, who held on to win 56-48. South Central Calhoun head coach Clive Clark says GTRA shot the ball well all night, especially in that fourth quarter, challenging his guys to focus up and stay strong late in the game. 

South Central Calhoun moves to 4-0 overall on the season as they have their sights on Southeast Valley coming up on Monday, December 13th.

Audubon Vs Central Decatur At Wells Fargo Arena

Audubon nearly battled back in the 4th quarter after falling behind 12 midway through the 4th quarter. The Wheelers cut the deficit to 48-43 on a beautiful catch and shoot by Jackson Deist of a perfect lob pass. The Wheelers had some momentum at that point but there was just over a minute left in regulation and Central Decatur was able to get a couple stops, holding on for the win.

Both teams struggled scoring in the 1st half with the Wheelers only scoring 14 points, but their defense kept them in the game, allowing Central Decatur just 23 points in the half and only 7 in the 2nd quarter. Audubon never led in the game but tied the game at 6 on a Gavin Smith layup as the Wheelers battled back from down 6-2. They were able to establish Edward Miller inside during the opening half.  Central Decatur outshot the Wheelers from beyond the arc, outscoring the Wheelers 21-6. That made up for the free throw line where Audubon went 13-15 helping the Wheelers to outscore the Cardinals by 10 points. Back-to-back 3’s in the 1st half after the Wheelers tied the game at 6 opened the Cardinals to gain control, building a 11-point lead in the 1st half.  Carson Bauer was held in check most of the game but was a big part of the Wheelers run late in the game and finished with a team high 14 points. Edward Miller added 10 points and a team high 7 rebounds. Gavin Smith finished with 9 points and 6 rebounds and Jackson Deist added 6 points.  The loss drops Audubon to 1-3 on the season. Two guys for IKM-Manning put in some good work, those two being Luke Ramsey and Caden Keller. Ramsey ended the game with a team high 11 points, and also had four rebounds, an assist, and three steals. Meanwhile, Keller had a team high 11 rebounds along with nine points and a steal in this game.  The Spartans had a big third quarter as they scored double what IKM-Manning did at 12-6 and extended their lead to 28-21. The biggest quarter for both teams came in the fourth where the Wolves and Spartans scored 20 plus points in a thrilling conclusion to this game. Exira-EHK still pulled away and outscored the Wolves 23-20 in the final quarter, but the Wolves played well in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, IKM-Manning came away with the lost 51-41. Paton Churdan had a better second quarter where they were still outscored by three points at 15-12 but showed off their skills. West Harrison took a 38-25 lead into halftime. Justin Stream and Shaydon Thurman both put in some good work against West Harrison, with Stream leading the team with nine points and both guys grabbing five rebounds.  West Harrison had a big offensive third quarter against Paton Churdan where the Hawkeyes went 26-2 and extended their lead further going into the fourth quarter. The Rockets rebounded the ball well against West Harrison but found themselves struggling to shoot well in the second half.
